Easy Photography Logo Tips | We’ve been in the design industry for over ten years now, but I have to admit I was absolutely floored by an article I read recently about logos. The whole point of the article was that if an average person was to photograph absolutely every logo they see from the moment they get up in the morning till the moment they leave home for work, they would have a few dozens of photos. Think about it: as soon as your alarm goes off, you pick up your phone, and there’s a logo. Brushing your teeth? There are at least two logos right there on your toothpaste and your brush! Making coffee? You guessed it – there’s a logo on the coffee machine!

We live in a world painted with logos! From the clothes we wear, food we eat, and billboards we pass on our way to work, they’re right there! So much so, in fact, that our brains adapted and learned to ignore most of the logos we see on a daily basis. This is great, because if we paid attention to absolutely every logo we see, we would probably lose our minds. This is also bad news for business owners out there – you need to create a logo that will break through this mental filter and grab the attention of your target audience. Challenging? Perhaps. Impossible? Not really!

Should Photographers Even Care About Logos? | Easy Photography Logo Tips

Logos are defined as symbols or other small designs created by organizations to identify their products, services, property, etc. However, creating a logo requires a lot more than pasting the name of your photography business next to a random shape and calling it a day. Not only will a logo represent you and your business, but it needs to be able to convey the nature of your brand, appeal to your target audience, and showcase your unique style. Sure, your photos will speak for themselves, and they can communicate all those things, but that doesn’t mean you can afford to overlook the face of your business.

First Impressions Count | Easy Photography Logo Tips

The very first principle of a great logo design is appropriateness. If your logo doesn’t match the nature of your brand and isn’t designed to appeal to your particular target audience, it will never be as effective as you hope. Think about it, many potential clients will see your logo on your business card or any other stationery item, long before they get a chance to check out your work, and they’ll immediately start forming their opinion, which means you can’t miss your chance to leave a great first impression.

Is your brand quirky, fun, friendly, or conservative, classic and elegant? Are you targeting brides-to-be or high-school seniors? All these, and many other things can be communicated with a logo. So, in order for a logo to be effective, it needs to be designed with your target audience in mind, and tweaked to perfection to represent your photography business. Creating a bold and grungy logo can do more damage than not having a logo if your target audience are new moms looking for a newborn photographer, so think about the impression you want to make and how you can do it with your logo.

Your logo will be used in pretty much every size possible and on various materials throughout its life cycle, so you’ll want to make sure it adapts effortlessly to any and all of them. Sure, your logo might look absolutely stunning on your computer screen, but will it be just as effective if you scale it down to fit your business card? This is why simple logos are generally the best option. Not only are simple logos easy to use, but they’re also easier to remember, which is your ultimate goal, after all.

Another thing you need to pay attention to is color! While color can communicate a lot about your brand and make your logo stand out, there will be situations where you won’t be able to use your logo in full color. Whether you’re faxing a document to a client, or copying something, your logo needs to work in gray scale, a single color, and in black and white. If your logo relies on color to convey a message, you need to find a way to communicate the same message even when the color is removed.

Use Vectors | Easy Photography Logo Tips

Whenever we design a logo for a client, we start by creating the design in black and proceed to tweak it till we’re completely satisfied with the shape. It is only then that we add the brand colors, or play around with different shades and color schemes to figure out what will work the best. But that’s not the only thing we do that affect versatility. We make sure we use vectors, because unlike raster images, vectors will allow you to scale your logo to any size without affecting the quality, whereas all raster images will start breaking into pixels at a certain point.
