Business Stationery Essentials | The Photographer’s Guide To Business Stationery
Business Stationery Essentials | Investing in business (or office) stationery might not be at the top of your list of priorities, especially in this day and age! There’s simply no denying that we live in a digital era, so why would you even consider investing in business stationery when you can reach your potential and existing clients in a matter of minutes? They’re just a few clicks away, so sending out a letter with custom letterhead is a silly idea, right? Well, not really. It turns out, business stationery is far from being dead! In fact, it’s just as important as ever.
The benefits of a well-designed stationery package are many and varied. It can reinforce your brand identity, leave a great impression on potential clients, boost client loyalty, and help grow your business. However, that can only happen when you put some thought, planning, and effort into your business stationery. To help you get started on the right track, we put together some of our favorite tricks we use each time we design stationery for photographers just like you.
It’s All About Being True To Yourself | Business Stationery Essentials
Just like with anything else in life, the most important secret to success when it comes to business stationery is staying true to yourself. Yes, you can take a look at your direct competitors to see what they’re using and do the same thing, but that might end up doing more damage than good. Just because something is working for them, it doesn’t mean it will work for your business plan. Not only that, but you’ll have a much better chance of standing out from the crowd if you take a look at what’s already out there and find an opening for something new.
In other words, don’t copy, imitate, or parody what other photographers are doing. Instead, create a stationery package that will meet all your needs, and accurately represent your unique brand identity. If you haven’t already, clearly define your brand’s guidelines and stick to them, whether it’s using the same color scheme throughout your materials, the same fonts, or the style of graphics. Remember, we all receive tons of marketing materials each day, so you need to make sure your business stationery stands out!
Keep Things Simple | Business Stationery Essentials
You’ll definitely want your business stationery to stand out even from the largest pile, but make sure it doesn’t stand out for all the wrong reasons. The primary purpose of business stationery is to deliver some content, whether that’s your contact details, a message, or your ad, so the last thing you want to happen is to have the design overshadow the content. That’s why we advise our clients to stick to 3-4 colors max, and to limit the number of fonts they use. The human brains find is difficult to scan multiple fonts at one, so you’ll want to stick with different versions of the same font family.
In addition to limit the number of colors and fonts, you’ll also want to limit the amount of content you include. This is best done for each item individually. Think about it – the amount of information appropriate for a flyer is completely different than the amount of information you’ll want to feature on your business card. Take some time to figure out what information is most relevant and appropriate for each item and leave everything else out.
Bridge The Gap | Business Stationery Essentials
Whether you’re handing out a business card, mailing out a letter with a custom letterhead, a flyer, or putting out a brochure for potential clients to pick up, your ultimate goal is to grow your business. Let’s face it, getting your stationery in the hands of your potential clients is only the first step. The second step is grabbing their attention – and hopefully, that’s exactly what your unique design did. Then comes the crucial step – getting them to find out more about you and your services. In other words, you want them to check out your website.
To make the transition easier, you can include a QR code in the design of your stationery items. They can be easily customized, so they won’t stick out from the design. You can use your brand’s color scheme, for example, to make it fit right in. The only downside is the fact that not everyone has a QR scanner app installed on their app. If you’re not a fan of QR codes, you can go with NFC chips. They can do everything QR codes can, but they’re implemented physically inside your stationery, not in the design! All you need to do is tap a NFC-enabled smartphone on the designated area and you’ll be taken to your website, portfolio, or your social media profile!
Invest In Paper | Business Stationery Essentials
You’d be absolutely amazed just how many photographers spend hours creating stunning designs for their stationery items, only to completely ruin them by having them printed on cheap paper stock! Think about it – no one likes a limp handshake, so why would they like a limp business card? By investing in high-quality paper stock, you’ll leave an impression of an established, reliable enterprise, and your potential clients will be more likely to link the quality of your stationery to the quality of your products and services.
