Keep Your Business Card Simple | Effective Business Card Principles

Make sure that your business card is readable. Stay away from card formats that have so much clutter that it makes it impossible to see where one piece of information ends and the other one starts. As a general rule of thumb, don’t go smaller than 8pt when it comes to the font size. Also, don’t forget about the font itself: keep it professional and simple – don’t be tempted to use Comic Sans, or a complex font which is impossible to decipher. Be sure the font color stands out against the background of the card, too. Light gray type on a white card makes it hard to distinguish letters and numbers.

Make Sure The Contact Information In Your Business Card Is Accurate | Effective Business Card Principles

Make sure your name, job title and company name or logo are prominently displayed. From our experience, your website, email address and phone number are crucial. Don’t clutter things up too much; just as with the design, simpler and cleaner is always better. It is worth saying that if you’re in between jobs, never give out your old business card. The information found there such as your job title and even your email address may already be inaccurate, and it doesn’t send the right impression.

Use Color To Convey Your Brand | Effective Business Card Principles

Do use color for interest and emphasis. Colors – when used the right way – can make a business card stand out even from the biggest pile. This strategy is often used by design and creative businesses, with the goal of appearing fresh, exciting and original. It can be in your logo or other images, in text, or in background elements. Stay with a maximum of 3-4 colors. Pull colors from your logo for other background elements and type colors. Keep your business card design consistent with the general color and design scheme on your website, in your store, and other marketing materials.

Your business card will sometimes be the first impression people will have of your business. If the card feels flimsy or looks like you printed it yourself on a cheap printer, it will leave people with impression that they are dealing with a business that will disappear as soon as the owner finds a real job. Avoid Using Borders | Effective Business Card Principles

Don’t use borders in your card design. This is for a really obvious reason – no matter how much attention is paid, printing is never 100% completely precise. They may look good, but when the cards are cut, you will most likely have some ‘lop-sided’ edges. All printers have a margin of error for cutting your cards, which can be as much as a few millimetres, so expect some variance in the area where the blade falls. Printers recommend leaving a 3mm Bleed – an area the same colour as the background – around the edges of your card, purely for this reason.
