We’ve been designing logos for photographers just like you for years now, and if we learned one thing, it’s that the initial ideas people have are usually the most generic (and most frequently used) ones. Let’s face it, the last thing you want is to have your logo mistaken for a logo of a competitor, so you’ll need to make sure you create a unique design. To get there, however, you’ll need to fill out a few pages of rough sketches and ideas before even thinking about using your computer. Then, narrow down the selection to only a few designs and start refining them.

Leave the color for the end of the design project – instead, focus on the actual shape of the logo and work on it until you’re satisfied with the overall look and feel. Remember, you’ll need to be able to use your logo in many different sizes and versions, so if you rely on color from the get-go to communicate a particular idea, you will need to figure out a way to communicate the same message even when the color is removed when you copy a document or fax something to a client. Your new logo will definitely be used in a variety of different sizes – particularly on the smallish side. Keep in mind that overly complex logos can “gum up” when used as a very small image. Think business card design, fax header, or even a golf ball! If your logo turns into an indiscernible smudge when scaled down to fit smaller marketing materials, you have a serious problem on your hands! This can be solved rather easily – make sure you don’t use unnecessary design elements such as shadows or other 3D effects. Instead, have a simple logo that’s easy to use and remember, and if you want, you can always have an alternate, souped-up version you can show off.
