In order to stand out, you need to be different. Duh, right? This might sound obvious, yet you’d be amazed just how many photographers out there use the same generic logo templates hundreds of other businesses are already using, and wonder why their logos don’t stand out! As the face of your business, your logo needs to be different than anything already out there! Take some time to do your research, look at the logos in your niche and your particular area and find an opening for something new. After all, the last thing you want is to have your logo mistaken for a logo of another photographer, so don’t follow the pack!

If you take a look at any of the world-renown, universally recognized logos such as the logos of Nike, Apple, Pepsi, or McDonald’s, you’ll notice they are not only unique, but that they’re ridiculously simple! While you may be tempted to keep adding elements to your logo in order to make it stand out, keep in mind that complex logos tend to be more difficult to use in everyday situations. For example, an intricate design might look stunning on your computer screen, but when you scale it down to fit a business card, it can turn into an unrecognizable smudge. Needless to say, simple logos are a lot easier to remember, which is exactly your goal here!

There are other things you can do in addition to keeping the design simple to ensure versatility. First thing you can do is to avoid using raster images and stick with vectors. While a raster image will allow you too enlarge it only to a certain extent before it starts breaking into pixels, vectors will allow you to scale your logo to practically any size without affecting the quality, whether you want to use your logo on a business card or a roadside billboard.
The other thing you should pay attention is color. Whenever we start working on a logo for a client, we design it in black first and add color only when we’re completely satisfied with the look and feel of the black version. This helps us focus on the shape of the logo, instead of getting distracted by color, but it also allows our clients to use their logo even in situations that allow printing in only one color or in gray scale. If you do rely on color to communicate a particular message, you need to find a way to effectively convey the same message even when the color is removed.

Your logo doesn’t only have to stand out from the crowd of other logos, but it also needs to appeal to the right audience. This is why you should have your ideal client clearly defined in terms of age, gender, location, and interests long before you start sketching your logo. For example, if you’re trying to appeal to high-school seniors, having a conservative and elegant logo will not do you as much good as a logo with bold shapes and colors would. It also needs to convey the nature of your brand – is your brand luxurious, modern, conservative, feminine, or commercial?
