Photography Blog Ideas | Setting up a website is much like showing up for a first date – you need to make sure it leaves just the right impression on your potential clients if you’re hoping to grow your client base. Thankfully, most photographers got the memo and are finally paying more attention to their online presence. Yet, you’d be surprised just how many photographers completely overlook one crucial element – the blog page! A website without a blog is like showing up for the first date all dressed up and sitting there, not saying a word. Don’t be that person!

We gathered some of the most important blogging tips for photographers to help you get started on the right track!

How Important Can A Blog Page Be? | Photography Blog Ideas

A lot! In fact, it’s more important than you think. First of all, having a regularly updated blog will keep your visitors coming back for more! Think about it – photography websites are notorious for being updated every 3-6 months, which means there’s no reason for your visitors to come back after they’re done viewing your portfolio. However, by regularly sharing interesting and informative posts, you’ll keep them coming back for more! A regularly updated blog is also a sign that you put a lot of attention to every aspect of your business, and it will show your visitors that you’re keeping busy. If you haven’t updated your blog in months now, they might even think you’re out of business!

Secondly, a regularly updated blog is the perfect recipe for boosting your search engine rankings! Search engines essentially scan the Internet and index the text – almost ignoring imagery and video! This is bad news, because photography websites are image-heavy (Thank you, Captain Obvious!), but you can turn this around by setting up a blog page, which will allow you to use your target keywords in an organic way. But it’s not just the keywords that matter – it’s the frequency of updates that matter as well! Websites that haven’t been updated in months will start losing even the ranking they already have, so get blogging!

But I Have Nothing To Blog About! | Photography Blog Ideas

Whenever we’re designing a website for a photographer just like you, we advise them not to skip the blog. The most common answer we get is that they’re not sure what to blog about. This is a common knee-jerk reaction, but if you take some time to think about the things that you like and that appeal to your ideal client, you’ll have a much easier job when choosing the topics. Share tips and tricks for better sessions, let your clients know what they need to do before the session, what they can expect during the session, explain the process, but also share bits and pieces about your personal life, funny situations behind the camera, and anything else you think might grab a potential client’s attention.

Show Some Personality | Photography Blog Ideas

Photography is a service, and a personal one at that. Your clients are letting you into their lives, and trusting you with some pretty big moments. The more you can give them reason to feel comfortable with hiring you, the better. This is actually easier to do than you might think! The idea is not to post random shots from your latest shoot – instead, let your personality shine through your blog posts, letting your readers get to know the person behind the camera. When they actually book you, they’ll feel much more relaxed because they’ll feel like they already know you!

Set Up A Schedule And Stick To It | Photography Blog Ideas

There are photographers that blog once a month, and then there are those that blog every day. Hey, some people have a lot to say, and kudos to them! However, this leaves other photographers scratching their heads – how often should you blog? Not everyone can come up with something to blog about each day, and that’s perfectly OK. However, you’ll want to make sure you’re blogging at least (and we really do mean at least) once a week! If you can do it more often, by all means, go ahead! Don’t force yourself to do it just because you decided to blog each day – your readers will figure it out and you might lose their trust.

One of our favorite tips we share with all of our clients is to set up a blogging schedule. Take a look back at the last year and try to figure out what days are least busy for you, and schedule blocks of time for blogging. This has two major benefits – once you decide that Mondays are for blogging, your brain will get into the blogging mode and you’re more likely to do it if it’s scheduled. That’s not all – your visitors will pick up your schedule and they’ll have a pretty good idea when to come back, instead of checking out your website each day.
