We know, we know, this sounds way to cheesy to be an actual design tip, but hear us out! We’ve all seen way too many photographers out there using cheap logo templates found on Etsy. While we have nothing against Etsy logos (some are absolutely stunning), the problem with them is simple – hundreds of photographers are already using them. At the end of the day, the last thing you want is to have your logo mistaken for that of a competitor. Instead, you should take a look at what’s already out there and find an opening for something new. Don’t follow the pack – dare to stand out!

That’s exactly the approach you should take when designing your logo – sure, adding countless design elements will definitely make your logo unique, but that doesn’t mean it will be good! Remember, simple logos are easier to remember, which is the ultimate goal of logo design! After all, if your potential clients can’t remember your logo, it will be a wasted investment! However, a simple logo is also a lot easier to use!
You’ll use your logo on different materials and in different sizes throughout its life cycle. Some of these applications will have severe restrictions: for example, you’ll need to scale down your logo to fit the business card. If the logo is too complex, it will turn into an indiscernible smudge. And while we’re talking about scaling your logo, you’ll want to make sure you’re using vector format for your logo. Unlike raster images, this will allow you to scale your logo to pretty much any size without affecting the quality. While the raster images will allow you to zoom in only to a certain degree before you start noticing the pixels, vector graphics will stay just as sharp no matter the size!

Color is a designer’s best friend, don’t get us wrong. We can spend hours discussing different shades of gray (not the novel, mind you!), but relying too much on color can do more damage than good. As mentioned, some logo applications will have restrictions, and you’ll have to use your logo in a single color, or even just in black, so if you rely on color to communicate a particular message, you’ll need to figure out how to communicate that message even when the color is removed. This is why we start the design process by designing every logo in black first, and we add the color only when we’re 100% happy with the design itself!
Keep in mind that every color has a different meaning, and the colors you use for your logo will depend not only on the nature of your brand and the message you’re trying to communicate, but also your target audience and even the area where you’re doing business. Certain colors have one meaning in one part of the world, and a completely different meaning in a different part of the world. Do your homework and research your colors, as the last thing you want is to communicate a wrong message because of a simple brush stroke!
